I have always believed that for a group of people making and running a project like NNW, the principles with which you operate, and how you make the product; it would make more sense to also support other platforms/OSs.
Apple only is highly limiting. More tech, privacy, and cybersecurity conscious people have already moved to open source alternatives like desktop Linux and GrapheneOS for their smartphone needs. And it would only behoove you to also be available on those platforms.
Now, I am not asking you to make apps for each but I am certainly asking/hoping/wishing for a website/web app that’s available for people to use as this option would provide the most freedom to use NNW if the goal is for everyone to adopt RSS considering how enshittified every major big tech platforms and larger websites are becoming.
I have always wanted to convey this message but big tech no longer aligns with how I want to see and use technology and software products & services. This leaves me to not being able to use NNW too unfortunately. And I would love to come back to it only if it were made possible.
Please consider expanding the scope and development. I apologize for missing the news/info where you may have earlier shared if there was a reason you don’t support anything other than Apple. If there is, I implore you to reconsider! Thank you.
(I’m willing to engage more should you have questions for how I and others I know who love NNW are hoping you to expand to other platforms).
I’d love to write NetNewsWire for Linux and NetNewsWire for the web — but my choice is pretty binary: either keep making the existing NetNewsWire better (with bug fixes and the features people are asking for), or expand to other platforms.
Our principles tell us that high quality is more important than covering a bunch of different platforms. We’re going to have to leave it to other people to make great Linux and web apps. (And, to be fair, those things exist.)
Thank you for clarifying. Though I would argue if a web version were made, it would benefit all and not just Apple users. But you know this so there must be a reason for why you have not pivoted.
(btw, I know this forum is new so there will be kinks to iron out. Please consider changing the settings on your end such that people can comment with less than 20 characters when you simply want to acknowledge or abide by brevity).
Nice forum. Thanks for the move, it’s way more accessible than Slack. And discourse is an excellent platform, that I know well through Drafts’ forum. I like NNW very much ; thank you for this great app.
