Trying to add a feed freezes NNW

When trying to add this https://vantara.in/en/resources via the NNW Safari extension, NNW freezes after clicking the add button, “finding feed” forever - Escape key does not help, and has to be force quit.

I am aware that this looks not like a feed address, but then why is the extension icon activ, showing that there is a feed available?

Greetings to all, Thomas_U

Good catch!

It turns out that it’s not freezing — it’s downloading a link from the page to see if it’s a feed. It’s downloading Endoscopic_Visual_Anatomy_RP_9151e9886a.pdf.

Why would it do that? Because the feed finder code in NetNewsWire looks for feeds by downloading links in the page (when it hasn’t found a feed already). It filters those links — by, for instance, looking for things like rss in the link.

In this case it finds atom as part of the filename, so it downloads it in case it’s an Atom feed!

The fix for this is likely another filter that filters out links that end with .pdf, .zip, .mov, etc.

I’ve added it to the bug tracker: https://github.com/Ranchero-Software/NetNewsWire/issues/5471

PS The extension is always available. It doesn’t know if there’s a feed or not — it leaves that to NetNewsWire to figure out once you’ve send the link via the extension.

ok, I alwys thought a pale icon was an indicator of no feed noticed…

In some previous versions the extension did try and detect a feed and light up only when detected.

But it didn’t go nearly as far as the app itself in looking for a feed, so false negatives were likely.

(It couldn’t go as far as the app, because it would have meant, on some pages, a whole bunch of extra traffic as it downloads links in the page looking for a feed.)

So I decided to just always make it available and let NetNewsWire find the feed.

Thanks, you made a good decision!
