New Theme - Ringo

Hi everyone,

I’d like to share Ringo, a reading theme for NetNewsWire inspired by the article view of Reeder Classic. It works on Mac, iPhone and iPad and is currently at version 1.4.0.

Highlights

  • Large images: photos, videos and figures extend into the page margins, while their captions stay aligned with the text.
  • Readable contrast: all text colors meet WCAG AA (at least 4.5:1). With Increase Contrast turned on they meet AAA (7:1). This holds in both light and dark mode.
  • Light and dark: follows the system appearance.
  • Your text size: follows the text size you set in NetNewsWire on the Mac and Dynamic Type on iPhone and iPad.
  • Comfortable line length: the text column is narrow and grows with the text size. Headlines wrap into balanced lines.
  • Calm layout: images that a publisher floats stay at no more than half the column width. Wide tables and code blocks scroll instead of breaking the page. Ghost and WordPress galleries, bookmark cards and portrait videos get their own layouts.
  • System fonts: uses San Francisco, so nothing is downloaded.
  • Optional JavaScript: Ringo works without JavaScript. If you turn on Article JavaScript, a small script hides the empty spacer paragraphs (<p>&nbsp;</p>) that many feeds insert.

I’d love your feedback

If a feed looks off in Ringo, please tell me. Examples are a broken image layout, an odd embed, or text that’s hard to read. A link to the article or feed helps a lot. I’m also happy to hear ideas and general impressions. You can reply here or open an issue on GitHub.

Thank you

A big thank you to @brent and everyone working on NetNewsWire! Being able to style the article view this precisely, with plain HTML, CSS and optional JavaScript, is a dream and wonderful in a feed reader. Thanks also to @daveatx for the nnw-theme tooling and the Theme Marketplace! They make it easy to test a theme on Mac and iPhone, package it and share it with others.

Happy reading!
Jonas
