New Error Log window/screen

In the latest betas, we have a new troubleshooting feature. (It’s really an old one from NetNewsWire of Yore).

Mac — go to Window > Error Log

iOS — go to Settings > Troubleshooting > Error Log

You’ll see a window or screen showing recent errors. (It prunes the log on every launch so it doesn’t grow forever — don’t worry about that.)

There is some more checking to do to make sure we’re showing all the possible errors. We’re not, yet, but we intend to.

For now it should still be useful, though, especially if you run into an issue (a credentials issue, for instance) and want more details about what happened.

7.0.2b5 has fixed both the credentials errors and missing endpoint I was getting with my FreshRSS instance – thanks for crushing this!

Are you looking for reports of specific feeds that have errors that aren’t shown in the log? I noticed I have a few where that’s the case.

for the RSS failures, it would be handy if the error log indicated which folder the feed was in. For example, one of my errors was:

[2026-03-18 22:34:31] On My Mac — Downloading feed: HTTP 429 Too Many Requests: https://prospect.org/api/rss/content.rss (Account/LocalAccountRefresher.swift:downloadSession(_:httpError:url:):213)

which was really because they had moved their RSS URL elsewhere. I figured that out and added the new RSS, but struggled to find where the old entry was located as the title and the favicon had both changed. I ended up exporting an .opml, but that’s sub-optimal.

Either showing the folder in Errors or – perhaps more useful – making it searchable by RSS URL or by feed title – in the main page would help find the feed.

Better yet — we’ll be bringing back the old Dinosaurs window, which will make dealing with feed errors like this even easier.

I have an interesting issue that this feature might help to solve. When I have a little time, I’ll take a look at the logs to see if there is anything there and post.

Essentially, I have one feed (BBC News) that produces doubles for articles. It is the only feed that does that. I suspect it is something to do with the way they update posts, as feeds like the Guardian (and others) only show me one article (even if the title has changed slightly)

The BBC simply DO NOT use RSS correctly. When they update an article they update its unique ID, and therefore RSS readers see it as a new article.

I humbly apologise on behalf of my national broadcaster.

I figured it was the unique ID. I’ll try to see if they have a contact that coule respond.

I’ve filed a request to the BBC to see if they’ll make a change. I hold 0% hope that it will happen, but it was worth a shot.

@mco If you’re willing to keep up the conversation with the BBC, here’s what you could say:

It’s not the updated timestamp that is the issue.

The issue is that same item appears with different guid elements. The guid is supposed to identify an article across changes. When an article appears with a different guid, the reader has to treat it as a different article.

Sometimes with the BBC feeds this happens over time, and sometimes we can actually see the same article listed twice in a given instance of the feed. For instance, the article ‘It’s a special thing to be on Planet Earth’ appears twice in this instance of feed:

The lack of updated at item level causes a problem if the BBC ever changed to static GUIDs. If the off-feed content is updated (BBC only provide a summary) and everything else in-feed (GUID, title, published, summary) remained the same, NetNewsWire would be blind to the item-level update.

  • use <link> as <guid>.

The rss feed this morning has been double-article free for me.

I’ll hold off claiming responsibility(1) and/or victory for the moment. But I’m hopeful that they’ve taken this seriously and made some changes

Unfortunately, it looks like they’re still doing the same thing with their guids. Here are some examples:

What I think they’re doing is incrementing that last number on every change, and it looks like their guid format still includes that change number.

Yes, sadly.

It was behaving odd (less frequent updates) and I had no duplicates until later in the evening.

Since then, its been :dog_face::poop: again :pensive_face:
