iCloud syncing cleanup

You’re still hitting error 4, which is CKErrorNetworkFailure. Have you tried on a different network? Or just tried restarting your iPhone?

Same problems with several wifi networks as well as the cell network. Restarted phone several times.

I don’t think I see any similar issues with any other apps (but I’m not completely sure what to look for).

Do I take it that no one else has come forward with similar problems? (Fellow readers, please do say if you have a problem like this!)

I see CKErrorNetworkFailure so frequently in other apps that I work on that, I just retry again after 5 seconds. It will clear itself up almost immediately.

@defjaf Do you really have almost 22k unread articles? Your stats look like that is what they are saying. If so, that might be a contributing factor.

I have now marked about 20k of the articles as read, and also deleted and redownloaded the iOS app and re-added the iCloud account.

Now, the error log is empty, but there are no new iCloud articles (the feed list is complete).

On all the other platforms (2 macOS & iPad), everything seems to be working fine. Not sure why the iCloud problems should only affect one device.

I am happy (-ish) to keep waiting, but the lack of any change over several days is getting me worried that maybe this won’t fix itself (unless it’s related to the 26.4 iCloud issue).

Now it will need to do an initial sync, which can take a long time. My advice is to make sure you’re running a TestFlight version on that device, and then keep NetNewsWire open so that the sync will complete.

Thanks, @Brent. Can you give an indication of what “a long time” means? Hours? Days? It was previously about three days since any iCloud articles had been updated on that device!

It’s impossible to know. It could be some minutes, but we’ve heard of it taking hours too. I wish I could be of better help!

It’s now been a couple of days with no progress. Should I expect to see any articles show up as the initial sync progresses, or just all at once?

NNW is fine on all my other devices. I can’t be completely sure, but I don’t think there are any other iCloud issues with my iPhone.

I am beginning to think that there is just some problem with NNW on my phone with the new sync infrastructure. I have tried deleting the app and reinstalling from TestFlight. Is anything retained about the device on iCloud that could make some issues persist? If so, is there any way to force some sort of reset? (E.g., turning off iCloud on the phone for a while?)

I suggest looking at the old iCloud troubleshooting page for advice: https://netnewswire.com/help/iCloud.html

Thanks, @brent! It was a bit of a chore — I had to delete my work Exchange account from the phone in order to set the sleep delay to never — but once I did I was able to get it to sync overnight.

As expected, not a bug but user error (or user difficulty?) after all…

Whew! I’m so glad it worked!

Definitely not user error. It just had a whole ton of stuff to sync. Should be better going forward.

One thing to double-check: make sure syncing unread article content is turned off everywhere you use NetNewsWire.
